Motorcycle making a figure 8 for the AVB/AVD exam

Precision Stop

The precision stop is actually harder than the emergency stop, but it’s also something you’ll use a lot in real riding. Think of stopping at traffic lights, stop lines, or in slow-moving traffic where you need to decide exactly where to come to a halt.

This exercise is not about braking as hard as possible. It’s about control and accuracy. You need to bring the motorcycle to a smooth, stable stop at exactly the right moment and position.

How do you do it?

Just like the emergency stop, you approach at around 50 km/h. The difference is that now you must come to a stop at a specific point.

You brake in a controlled way using both front and rear brakes, downshift to first gear, and place your right foot on the ground once you come to a complete stop within the marked area.

Unlike the emergency stop, this is not about stopping as fast as possible. It’s about stopping as precisely as possible, while keeping the motorcycle calm and under control.

Where do things go wrong?

Most mistakes happen when learners focus too much on the stop line. That causes them to look down, which immediately affects balance.

Another common issue is braking too early or too late, which means you miss the target point and end up correcting at the last moment.

Some also forget to shift back down into first gear while braking.

Tips

  • Make sure you are steadily riding at 50 km/h before the exercise starts
  • Brake evenly using both front and rear brakes
  • Build braking pressure smoothly while keeping your eyes forward
  • Just before stopping, slightly release the front brake so the bike rolls to a calm stop
  • Downshift to first gear while braking

My experience

Out of the three braking exercises, this one was probably the hardest for me — not because braking itself is difficult, but because stopping at exactly the right point requires good judgment.

In the emergency stop, it’s about stopping as quickly as possible. In the deceleration exercise, there’s a bit more room. But in the precision stop, everything has to line up perfectly.

Timing is everything: getting up to speed, starting your braking smoothly, and shifting down at the right moment. Especially judging when to arrive at the line is tricky at first.

Official CBR description

“In the precision stop, the goal is to come to a stop just before the second gate. You first ride at 50 km/h and begin controlled braking when passing the first gate of two cones. You then bring the motorcycle to a stop 17 meters further on. The braking must be smooth and consistent using both brakes, without major corrections in braking force. Just before coming to a stop, you shift down into first gear.”
