Sometimes you come across a dish that makes you hungry the moment you see it.
It might be at a restaurant, at a market, or just as easily in a film or somewhere on social media, where suddenly a dish you’ve never heard of catches your eye. I always find it fun to see if I can recreate it at home.
These days, that’s much easier than it used to be. Recipes are everywhere, ingredients can often be found at an Asian or international grocery store or ordered online, and even when something is impossible to find, there’s usually a good substitute.
But perhaps the best part is putting the finished dish next to the original. It doesn’t always look the same. Sometimes it doesn’t look anything like it. Then I can only hope it tastes just as good.
BRING ME YOUR DISH
Do you have a favourite dish from somewhere far away?
Something your family makes, something you grew up with, a dish you discovered on your travels — or simply something from your part of the world that you think I should try?
Japan, Cameroon, Peru, Mexico, Georgia, India… anywhere.
Send me your dish at stories@bonviastories.com.
Tell me what makes it special, and I’ll see if I can recreate it in my own kitchen.
Your favourite dish could become my next story.
